Reflections on MD

Post by nil » Sat Jul 27, 2019 4:57 pm

To some players I may have become another less relevant person having been out of touch with Halo or the playing community for a couple or more years now, but I think this is an appropriate time for me to write a reflection on MD so here goes.

HaloMD came out so long ago we may have forgotten its purpose, which was to revive the demo version of the game to the public and extend the life of Halo modding.

So I created a special client to play and join games, Modzy wrote a utility to bring over a mass collection of demo & custom edition maps, 002 enhanced the way the game is played and modded, Samuco developed innovative game modes and tools, Monoman and Sparky provided hosting resources, veteran and new modders alike created and showcased awesome maps, and a gaming community of many newcomers emerged. Many contributions were made for the overall game that I won't have time to jot down here. It's easy to take for granted now, but playing and distributing maps to the masses before MD was a quite lacking experience.

Circa 2012, some people here (including me) thought we were at the dying end of the game and we have passed the pinnacle of Halo modding. Who would have thought we would have extended the game and community in unique interesting ways for another 5+ years? To that end, I say we had some great fun and success.

I know some of you may still do whatever it takes to continue playing or modding, and there may still be a small community around on the Mac even with future OS systems dropping support for the native port, or a community lingering on the PC side. Let me say though that parting ways and shifting focus on other things besides Halo or even gaming, can also be a good thing. I have changed gears myself and it has helped me get where I am today. That said, like others on here, I owe a great amount of invaluable experience from being in this community, so thank you all and best of luck to everyone.
I am no longer active to Halo or MGM, and don't guarantee a response on the forums or through email. I will however linger around the discord room for general chatting. It's been fun!

It's been a blast, nil. Thanks for all the hard work.

It's too bad that Apple is killing 32-bit app support, and a casualty of that is HaloMD. I guess all good things must come to an end.

I've decided to build a PC for VR and the new Master Chief Collection coming out for Windows.

Can't believe MGM has been around for over a decade now... time flies!

Best wishes in your new endeavors.

I love this place. It was an escape when I was younger and it's a Nostalgia bomb for me now. The amount of fun I had here and the times I've shared with you all I will never forget. I was 15 when I joined this site. I am now 27, 2 kids, IT Specialist for a Health Center. Getting into computers, games, everything, I learned from this website. Today I'm working on some VR Game Ideas (When I have time). I am still fascinated by computer science and how we can use it to make unforgettable experiences like the ones I've experienced here.

Lmao, whatever man. You know who you are damnit.

I cant come up with words to describe what this website, people and time meant to me. I would go back if I could but like Nil said moving on can be great thing. I can't wait to see what awesomeness I encounter later on in my life. Just remember that life is kinda like Halo Modding, you get out of it what you put into it.

Just wanted to add in, I didn't come back with the resurgence of MD, but I grew up on this site with you guys. So thanks for everything, I am very fond of those memories. For reference, I think I was 10 or 11 when I first posted and Neko Chan scolded me for my grammar and spelling.

Today a co-worker mentioned playing halo 1 again and we immediately hopped on over to download MD for a last hurrah.

HaloMD brought new life into a dying game and community. All those years of manually renaming maps to bloodgulch and distributing everything on mediafire. The confusion of joining modded servers without the correct map file. HaloMD fixed all that plus countless other quality of life improvements that made the game more fun to play.

Thank you nil and all the other developers and modders for your hard work.
