So sad... a tribute to the old days

A few days ago I got an automated email from Monoman because some noob bumped a topic from 10 months ago. I spent a few minutes looking around the forums, browsing topics, etc. for the first time in months when I realized how many of my fellow modders have left MGM, modding, or Halo altogether.

I myself deleted Halo and all my mods when I realized that it had been weeks since I last played Halo, opened HexEdit, or even been to these forums. (For those of you who browse the ClanHalo.net forums this was the reason of my leaving.) In short, Halo isn't what it used to be, and it never will be again.

I remember the good ol'e days when I first gained access to the Mod Development forum, and everything was new and exciting. The dozen or so most active members (including me, at one point in time) were all active in figureing stuff out, having fun laughing at unexpected modding results, and patting ourselves on the back when >Shadow< first figure out how to make the Pelican in the Silent Cartographer flyable. I only wish that we could turn back time back to when we were all avidly awaiting sword's modding pack release.

And now when I look around I am saddened. sword still hasn't released The Island 2.0 *wink wink, nudge nudge* and any other "big" modding developments are nonexistent. I find myself perplexed by the fact that I rather enjoyed the days when Hellspawn made Hellgulch and it filled up all the demo servers. There aren't any more topics in the Dev Board where we would start talking about modding, get way off topic, and Beast would say something that was beyond hilarious.

What saddens me the most in that things will never be the same as they once were. It isn't possible for me, or any of you, to bring back all of the modders who have left since then; to bring back all of the life which once filled the Halo Demo section of the MGM forums; to simply make things as they once were.

But who knows? Halo 2 for Mac/PC is supposed (the last I heard) to come out towards the end of the year. It may be possible that by some odd chance some of my fellow modders return to the forums and Halo. But I truly doubt that will happen.

I can't propose a toast to the old days over the Internet, or really do anything for that matter. All that I, or any of us, can do is to remember those days and those people (including those people who drove me crazy and I yelled at).

That's my two cents.

Very true, there. Very true.

And actually, I think it was the Covenant Dropship which I was supposedly the first to figure out how to get drivable.

Anyways, sword HAS released The Island v2...but it's in some strange program that's locked up. Nobody so far knows how to get it to work I don't think. But I too wish that we could go back to some point where modding was fresh and young. Nowadays however, most modding knowledge is common stuff...and what's not simple projectile swapping is kept hidden from everyone.

It's honestly a real shame that everyone withholds knowledge to make great maps. Such as SP -> MP conversions, CSS projectiles, stuff that is considered "Worthy of making you a god modder" is all withheld. All because the people who know how to do it are just so damn egotistical that they won't share this knowledge.

People like being called "God modders" and for that reason, when they make something good, they just won't tell how they did it. These people say that the other people should learn on there own...this puts up a very good argument seeing as one person who has worked long and hard to figure out something should have the right to keep their meathods secret because they don't want other people to just be lazy and not even try-just wait for a tut to come.

But still, as it is very well known, Halo Demo is quite literally and above all else dead. If it would save Halo Demo, why don't people just tell people how to do stuff? Why do people have keep withholding information? It just doesn't seem right.

Cheers mate.

Man...there's really nothing to say...but since I am me, saying that means I must say something...so two things:

A) Yes, it is HORRIBLY sad and I miss the old days a lot. Who couldn't? Who couldn't remember the days when they were a noob and were learning projectile swaps, and now all we can do is laugh at those days ::laugh giggle laugh::...anyways yes, those days were the best, I totally agree...but, think about this too:

B) Why can't we all accept this as one simple thing wearing us all down: TIME. Sure we can all think about those days, but why be so negative? You sound like my 80 year old nextdoor neighbor who says..."Oh...kids these days..." well COMMON! Get up and HELP THESE BOARDS FOR GOD SAKE! ENJOY IT! Why must you leave just because the inevitable is happening: time moves forward. Stay on these boards, and help us enjoy time moving forward instead of making it all a bad experience for all of us. We all love you old veteran guys (including me, sort of) but really...you all are too negative. I mean no offense, but if you weren't egotistical yourself, you would realize how negative you have been and how pointless it is to leave.

I am planning on leaving for only one year, since it will be my Junior year of High School, which anyone knows it's the hardest. I will probably also leave my freshman year of college. After that, I'm back on. But, this is not because I must dwell on how the old times were better, this is because I have other things to do in life that do take priority over Halo and modding. Modding and Halo are my leisure time, and as of right now, I have a lot of that.

Anyways, my message...just stay on. If you're thinking of leaving, THINK TWICE. Talk it over with me. I am willing to listen to your reasoning.

Hah, people still think the map is released.

Note how it says "Popcorn Kernel" for the program name in the top bar.

Wait, Halo 2 is coming for mac? I thought it was vista only.
And I have an idea, how about we actually start making GOOD mods? I myself am trying to get ai in bg. I know how to, I have done it in full,
but in the demo version it crashes when I load the map.

Also, This might make modding easier. It opens demo maps without hexing the full header, and is much better than hmt.

Everything has it's glory days. But new experiences only last so long. If only we could choose our never never land then yeah, you could live out the "good ole days" for as long as ya want.

There are new modders hopping onto the scene and just like you did, some are working hard and experimenting, learning things that you may have already learned years ago, also on their own. I've been teaching myself to mod and hope that when I can start putting up a mod or two I can earn my stripes as a worthy modder. By the time I get good at it, maybe the Halo demo will be long dead with no servers online. College and work sure stretch out time to do these little projects on the side. But, I'm still doing it anyway.

I'm sure there are still a lot of possibilities in the gulch or last cartographer. Changing the scoring system for one of my ideas might be 100% impossible and completely far-fetched, but the maps aren't the only 2 bits of data that you can hex edit. Well, I believe anyway. I really dunno if modding the app itself could do anything.

Anyway, in short; ya may miss the old days, but have faith in the new.

Yeah Demon I know exactly what you mean. Now that I think about, I'd love to go back to the summer days when life was carefree. It's kinda strange that the magic that was modding has kind of faded. I guess we just have to wait for Halo 2.

Expect some extreme activity from me over the summer though. =)

I actually found myself sketching out some plans for finishing The Shaft...

Btw, I've been learning quite a bit more about programming. So, some interesting things may start to happen.

I almost cried while reading Demon's post because I was listening to The Convo by DMX.

...

What?! It has a sad melody...

Oh and about AI in Gulch. You import the actv, not the bipd. Import the actv tags and then make the AI spawn in vehicles. For example, if you want elites in gulch, make them spawn in ghosts. In HMT, go to the dependancy swapper, go to the ghost, and fill one of the nulled actv slots with the imported actv. And make sure you have ghosts spawning in the map. Replace the shees with them or something.

Here's a little pack with readme and a map with Elite AI in Ghosts.

This is all sad in all.

I'll stay around though if anything new comes up.

Since there's nothing I can really do with this gay eMac.

Damn the PowerPC's!

But what's really going to be sad is that everyone would leave for good (MGM) and other Halo modding sites and we never goy to see each other again.

Hah, what might bring tears of joy, would be us in our late 90's, still here, modding, as a family.

That'll be awesome.

And when I'm 90, I'll still be learning how to put in those damn CSS projectiles...

Kinda why I was more or less leaving. That is, until my Rise of Nations disk decided that it would quit working no matter what I did. And I had just figured out how to finish Splinter Cell (turn around and walk through doors... I though I had to take out some gaurds, cross a courtyard, climb the opposing wall, run along the roof, find a way down, take out more gaurds, and finally escape by helicopter... Dissapointing, really). Starcraft isnt what it used to be either. My freinds I had dont play, and there isnt much new on Battlenet. So now I anxiously await the day that Wii's fill shelves and sell at retail price so my dad will buy one. Then I can kill myself trying to play Medal of Honor Vangaurd and Call of Duty 3. Cant wait. But until Halo 2 comes out for PC, and hopefully Mac, things are gonna be pretty boring. It will be nice to have an entirly new platform to mod on...

As of right now, Im trying to figure out how I would get Half Life 2 and a computer that can play it. That was a fun game for the 30 minutes I spent throwing books, boxes, plastic objects, bottles, and other miscellaneous objects at Cobine forces. XD

*sigh*

Back to the mediocre modding for me then. I dunno what I'll do when I finally decide to quit... And yes, I do actually wish it were like before. Us sitting around arguing about whether jetpacks and lightsabers were possible, and oogling at Deox's incredible Forest and Space Arena mods. The good old days when flying tanks were (for some reason) a "secret". Those days when this site was busy with life and people coming and going.

Now that Ive said that... I think Ill go try to find new interesting stuff on Youtube.
