Smoke grenades

well I have the prefect smoke grenade model (.obj, 3ds). I've replaced them with the frag grenades and set the damage to 0. As for the smoke, i haven't really figured out how to produce smoke from the frag grenades.
The problem is with importing the model in replace of the frag grenade.
In HMT i save the meta of the frag grenade which i then import into OBJ. After setting the geometries to 1 part 0 I export it OBJ.
I then open up Wings 3D and import the model i want to replace with (smoke grenade)
Then i import the frag grenade i exported in OBJ.
I then scale down both models so they are even and then I triangulate them.
after that i export what i have on Wings 3D into a .obj format
I open up OBJ and I open the new temp.obj.meta (defualt name) I set the verticies and indicies to 0 (except for the highest one).
I then save the offsets inject them (HMT) append, and append raw.
lastly, i change the header of the demo bloodgulch back to the original.
I open the game and it crashes. what am I doing wrong? Did I not change the header properly? ==> for that i copied the four bytes from the second line of full bloodgulch onto the demo bloodgulch. I reallly forget this stuff, it's been a long time since i touched halo modding.
