HDM e-mail spam question

So we've had another surge in spam on the HDM e-mail servers, and I wonder how you think this should be handled, because it seems like each Fall we have a surge of bots that register on the wiki and use the e-mail feature there to spam our users. So I can get rid of that e-mail feature, which simply means that you will need to publish your e-mail address on your user page if you want to be contacted via e-mail. I don't see a problem with this, because it is optional anyway from within the user's settings on the wiki's preferences tab that is accessible after a user logs into the site. Does anyone see a problem with me turning off the e-mail feature?
