Life After 'Ghost Recon' (the next game?)

Post by [BIG] Ranger » Mon Dec 15, 2003 2:27 am

Let's face it, Ghost Recon is getting on a bit...

One of the good things about being a Mac user though is how much longer games hang around than on the PC (or console) side of things. Even so, I do wonder what we are going to do when 'GR' gets a little too long in the tooth...

Like most of you I have probably exploited the whole mod thing as far as it could go (...luckily Monoman and a few others do keep coming up with fresh wrinkles...), and I have done the whole 'Island Thunder' convertion, and have even tried a few of the total game converstions...

Furthermore, I noticed the other day that what will probably be the last installment of the 'Ghost Recon' series - 'Jungle Storm' will be PS2 ONLY!

So what will we be playing next...Any speculation that there will be a 'Ghost Recon II', or will the be another game that Mac people will be moving on to?

(Personally, because Ghost Recon runs on practically anything I will be playing it for a long time to come, but I must admit that I've been trying out 'Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix' - but this is OSX only, so my OS 9 mates can't play!)

Jungle Storm for the PS2 is actually just Island Thunder. Have you tried playing the Frostbite mod? Frostbite is so big, you could consider it another expansion pack. I have heard alittle about Ghost Recon 2 but mostly rumors. Also, if there was a Ghost Recon 2 it would take forever to get to the mac. The best bet now is Raven Shield but its only OS X.

There will always be Rogue Spear[Rainbow6:2]. ;) The maps, fast pace gamestyle, and cool mods in that game, will keep it alive on its own. Not to mention how many people dedicated themselves, and their websites dedicated to the game in the past, which can never be forgotten. A true Tom Clancy™ legendary game.

But of course, there's Raven Shield[Rainbow6:3]. And that will be out very soon! :D

And don't forget Rainbow Six[Rainbow6:1]. That game started it all!

GhR was not as fun as any of the [Rainbow6] Series.(Notice all titles start with "RS" in the [Rainbow6] Series) That's why Raven Shield will be a huge hit!
(lot's of new adjustments when it comes to weapons, which will make it even more realistic than before, attracting a huge audience, and called best all around game of all time!!! 8) |ÅK| will own with our TeamPlaying™ skills.)

It looks like it will have to be 'Rainbow 6 III', although this will no doubt require a (unecessariliy) high spec system and OSX only.

I looked up 'Rainbow 6 II - Rogue Spear' (which I must admit I had completely overlooked, not having got the first installment), but that is OS9 only...

So I am kinda stuck between a rock and a hardplace...As I am OSX only at the moment.

My option seems to be to install a second OS9 drive or partision to my system, and then to buy 'Rogue Spear'. Not as bad as it sounds as at least the system requirements will be modest...This would mean that we could successfully network play in my office, which is a mix of mid-spec OSX, OS9 and Windows machines (one of the reasons that 'Ghost Recon' has been such a big hit in our office as it runs excepyionally well over all these OSs).

Its a shame that nobody has brought out a OSX exe/launcher for Rogue Spear (like they have done with 'Unreal Tournament') so that those who have upgraded to OSX can continue to play this game...As I suspect that 'RS III's spec will be out of teh reach of the majority of Mac gamers (As we are not processor speed hogs like PC users are).

Thanks for the info though (I will probably try the OS9 partision option).

You can't boot up into OS 9 on the new macs. You can only run classic from OS X.

One other option I do have is 'Tactical Ops'...*

If you don't know, 'Tac Ops' is 'Counter Strike' for the Mac! It's based on a very successful 'Unreal Tournament' mod, and is played a lot on GameRanger (check out the UT servers)...

The latest (and final) version is available as a retail stand-alone game for the PC...But if you are slightly geeky and don't mind fiddling with files, it can be converted over to the Mac (in rather a similar way that 'Island Thunder' is ported to the Mac).

The basic mod is still available free as a download for the Mac - although you need a full version of 'Unreal Tournament' to use it...

It's not as realistic as 'Ghost Recon' and is purly a online team tactical game (like Counter Strike)...But it is very exciting to play and the weapons are well done.

If you are interested in how to convert it, there is a Mac forum which deals with all the instructions: http://forums.clanmto.com/ikonboard.cgi

* PS...There is also another similar mod for the Mac called 'Strike Force' which is very good, and in case you have the Mac version of 'Quake Arena' instead of 'UT' then there is similar mods for that too (again based on 'Counter Strike') called: 'Urban Terror' & True Combat'...

I have tried them all - they all work, though 'Tactical Ops' is far and away the best of the bunch, see www.macgamefiles.com for these others.[/url]

Yes, if you get Panther you will only be able to run RSD in classic. GhR and RS have different playing styles. I like RS for its fast pace but I also like GhR although not for the same reasons. I think it depends on what game you started with. Most people that started with RS like it more than GhR and people who started with GhR don't like RS.

My favorite game changes alot. For awhile it was Team Arena and AvP. RSD was fun for the gameplay, players, and modding. At the moment its GhR for modding and gameplay. Soon it will probably be RvS.
