Hosting gripes

Post by Vir2L™ » Thu Oct 28, 2004 10:06 am

Here are some of my gripes about bad hosts.......

1. If you are gonna host a room, than "host" it. My major gripe about n00bie hosts is they open the room for 6 people to join only to play one game and then they close it. WTF! Have some common courteousy for the clients that are joining your room. To often i see hosts create a room, close it 10 mintes later, leaving all the people that joined it wondering why they ever join the stupid room in the first place. If you are gonna host a quick game... than put "quick game" in your room description! What a novel idea!! That'll keep most of the people that play on real servers from joining your room just to get turned away to find another server. A real host keeps the room open for an extended period of time so people can join and leave at their leisure.

2. Have enough resources to host the amount of players you allow in the room. To many times i have seen "hosts" hosting on an inferior system maxing out their resources, and wondering why they crash all the time or don't enjoy their gaming experience becasue they are gettin 2 FPS. (hint hint YOU SHOULDNT BE HOSTING)

3. Have control of your room. Don't let n00bs and geeblers run rampant and kill the session for eveyone.

These are just a few of my gripes, I have more....... but maybe someone else can add some of their thoughts on good/bad hosting ettiquete.

anyone else have somethin they wanna add?

yea, if you're going to host some obscure mod don't assume everyone HAS IT or knows where it is.

also: hosts who require piece of shit buggy mods with missions that crash, have shades, etc.

HOSTS - KNOW YOUR MODS AND missions. Know what missions to play and what not to play.

also VOX hosts and clients: use the damn thing right. all too often players or hosts have vox but only talk to one or two people or only their friends. most of the time this leaves me wondering WTF i have vox for. COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY if you have vox. and yeah, watch your gain people (input volume), some of you sound like your screaming. And don't talk to people needlessly in the middle of a firefight, esp. you dead people. keep it short sweet and to the point. this is hard to do though, we're all guilty of talking about something with nothing to do with the game and needlessly getting a pal killed

oh yea, and you know who you are, you do this...

"tango spotted" via text chat. WTF???(&*)(&*)(%%!!! stop spamming useless messages, say where the f*ck they are, dammit.

and oh yes, last night on a stealth mission, some idiot f*cks up the game by parking himself in the middle of a traffic area, doesn't follow orders or suggestions and ends up ruining stealth, and the game, for everyone.

if you join a stealth game play it right or dont play it at all. and certainly don't exit a game leaving your bot running around like a headless chicken sure to ruin the stealth mission (idiots...). Gah.

heh...we are all guilty of this at one point or another, some more than others..... but a good rule of thumb should be DEAD PEOPLE DON'T TALK OR LEAD. Leading the rest of the guys thru a mission when you are dead is cheating, IMO. If you wanna chat, type it, so only the dead people can read it, and the people still alive have open airwaves, not a gridlocked-distracting-audio-hell-hole.

and yes... i too wish people would stop spamming TANGO ON MAP. Players need to be accurate with the intel they provide, give out a grid coordinate (most mods provide them). Vague statements like "tango sited" and "tango on map" are some of the worst messages you could possibly SPAM.

I'm also tired of messages like **Sir, YES SIR!!**, but that could be just me. lol

A quick rule to follow, Don't host a room named . . . Ex. Many mods required. What good does this do anybody? I see this far too often

More about hosts knowing their sh*t:

Know what you are hosting: If not use your brains. If you host something on elite and everyone dies right off, get a clue. If you only have 2 people why are you putting it on veteran or elite. Most missions are plenty hard at recruit with 30 tangos when there are only 2 friendlies.

the lack of thinking ceases to amaze me.

If you don't know what something is, certainly don't test it offline beforehand and definitely don't check out the readme. You might learn something. That plus not thinking about why everyone is dying and why people are leaving...

well . . . i don't mind chit chat by deads and joinees -- i can concentrate while those around me talk away -- and i can speak up if i need to be heard -- but that's just me, so i'm trying not to talk so much -- what sucks balls is that on this old ghr game you can't actually see what's happening in a game you join late, so i would prefer to talk with the gang -- they are free to ignore me when they are alive and have to -- i don't EXPECT a response to my musings, ot or not, right away or evar -- and when i'm in a game i don't feel obligated to give a response or even to listen to the dead/joinee -- but oh well -- otoh, THERES NOTHING ELSE TO DO (tho you could leave your comp and then find yourself kicked after waiting 30 min or more for a game)
people think all we do is lie around and think of how rich we'd be if we didn't think life could improve

lot's of crap above about the quick hitter hosts, which i don't mind myself (perhaps because i don't experience that many), but NO mention above of the "silent-ender" host, who is MUCH WORSE than the guy who is only hosting a game or two:

IF SOMEONE JOINS THE HOST'S GAME (present company of hosts included) AND THE HOST INTENDS IT TO BE HIS LAST HOSTED GAME, PLEASE LET THE JOINEE (usually me) KNOW BY VOX OR TEXT MESSAGE OF THAT FACT ASAP (obviously, it is reasonable to wait until a time you are free "in-game" to do so) SO THE JOINEE (me again) DOESNT GET LEFT (silently!, i might add, given the above posts) HOLDING HIS (mine) DICK FOR 25 MIN UNTIL THE HOST'S GAME ENDS AND THEN HOST (y'all) IMMEDIATELY CALLS IT A NIGHT WHEN HE COULD HAVE SPARED ME THE WASTE OF THOSE MINUTES FROM MY LIFE (via vox or text as above)

silent ender hosts should be banned! (if it wasn't his own server -- heh)

// obviously sometimes no one see the joinee enter -- no problem there
people think all we do is lie around and think of how rich we'd be if we didn't think life could improve

im feelin the "silent-ender" comment.

The host should make it clear to late joiners that it is infact the last game.
I realize too, that someone might not see someone join to know they are even there to tell them its last game.

In general, thru my observations, i have noticed people tend to NOT read the text located on the top left of the screen, for important intel on the present mission, or see if people join at the beginning of the game so the host can start over. My rule of thumb is if there is a late joiner before 2 minutes into the mission i restart, so they can play and not wait 15+ minutes in the wating room.

Another thing a host should do is let the players know what the ROE's are for each mission. (Stealth, Assault, Defend, etc.) This will help the flow of the game, and keep some of the players to stay within the boundaries of what is expected of them for that mission.

hm, here's one. Dont sit on MBC all friggin day. Seriously, today, i got on, and no names mentioned, cuz every one does this, almost, this dude hosted, and had this impossible game mode on, and it was on mbc the whole time, for like 3 or 4 hours. When guys left, he started cussin at em. another thing, sorta along the lines of same map shit, AND to clans. Z][T did this, and it wasnt all of em, but it was like 5 or 6, a while back. they hosted this room called "ZT vs all". so when we came in, just random ppl, lookin for a good game, they sit on this one map, that they had obviously practiced together on, and then they gloat like they're really good! we were like, "change map" but they wouldnt, and it really sucked. If you're good at one map, you suck, sorry, cuz true skill encompasses basically all terrain.
It doesn't matter what you meant to say, because what you meant to say doesn't matter.

For starters, z][t is a very good mp clan and is pretty good at more than one map. Second if you really dislike the host/room that much (as it sounds you do) you always have the freedom to just leave.

This thread is intended for hosts/clients to read and get a better understanding of what is expected from them for a better gaming experience......

 Please leave the finger pointing out of it.
