Community Whitelist

I was thinking when the main comes back of implementing a new way of handling new players on the server. I don't like dealing with a whitelist even if its based on the forum as some people may not want to go through the hassle to play on the server. The new system would give the power to everyone in the community. Initially when a person would join the server they would not be able to do anything until someone else on the server gave them permission to do so.

Here is an example.

Taxi and a friend join the server. Taxi already is a member of the server and can build in the world. His friend is new to the server and can only wander around. His friend would not be able to build or interact with anything. Taxi could then give his friend access to do everything. In this setup, Taxi is vouching for his friend.

This setup also means if you invite someone to the server and they start griefing everything then both of you will be banned.

For completely new people, they would probably have to talk to people ingame for awhile or get involved on the forum before access is granted.

What does everyone think of this type of setup?

I think that could work excellently, perhaps we could designate a specific area for guests to build in?

Now that's a good idea. We could have a huge chunk of land divided into sectors that could be reset once they become overbuilt!

something like this:

Newbies can build into these squares, and when the space runs out older chunks can be reset so that more newbies can build on them!

Remember that mod where you could make maps for CTF? and you could reset the battlefield at the end? well, we could use that mod for this! …or something!

Anyway, the new player accepting system makes sense to me!

^that, and I didn't even think about resetting areas. I if we were to have sectors like that, it would be best not to reset them all at once and even let people have fun in that sector (I.E. Stress relieving griefing :p)

Sounds like a plan. Certainly a lot simpler than a whitelist.

Is having a special area for them where they can build and interact preferred over not being able to do anything unless someone else gives them access?

Wouldn't give brand new people much reason to stay if all they could do was watch and talk.

I would prefer there being a guest area.

Make an impossible obstacle course for them and tell them that they can edit once they make it out. They'll stay until rage quit!

Guest area is the best bet. Also, make sure that you can get there from the spawn. Perhaps a portal or something.
