It's up to the server operator to decide how the server should be run. If it's a PG13 server host, expect to be banned for inappropriate behavior.
If you're not up for the rules, you're completely free to start your own servers.

Make sure the application is named "Pearl.app" and nothing else, otherwise it will crash. Also make sure these are the maps from the retail game and not the custom edition.

1.2 is probably your best bet. It will convert CE to demo. 1.3 does the same thing as 1.2, it's just based on a different code base and may or may not function better/faster (but could corrupt the map in the end).

If you're converting from Demo to full/MD, then the built in index should be enough to handle everything without full maps.
Missing senery and such is common if the map originally had a null BSP, as that hack no longer works in full/MD and must be worked around.

Looks like I misunderstood your issue. The map converts fine, however not all the vehicles spawn, likely due to game type differences. Some CE scripts have trouble running in retail versions of Halo PC (which is what MD runs off of). I can take a look at it later tonight, however I believe 002 made a plugin for MD that allows it to run CE maps without converting. It's worth a try to see if that'll run it. Sounds like you have an extension installed that conflicts with the ones on Bigass. Try turning all extentions off.

You can join MD games via the direct IP option in Halo PC's multiplayer. Simply obtain the IP address that your friend is hosting his MD game from and direct IP into it. When Halo launches it applies temporary system changes to the screen settings in order to give the game the correct look (or rather, how the makers intended it to look). I've noticed recent issues with this setting change occurring, which can make the game look different on different computers.
