Notch has confirmed Wolves being in the game, and it looks sexy as hell.

Apparently they are coming in 1.4, which should be released within the next few weeks or so in time for Easter. You can train them to be your pets, but they are quite rare. Once they are tamed they don't despawn! Huzzah! (I will go on epic mining quests with my wolfies.)
