I was making the point that fiancé = male and fiancée = female.

Francais c'est une langue parfait.

English bastardizes all other language, Knightmare, so while it may have a masculine and feminine in French, we just use the lazier one.

@ Mota, you won't really regret it if you do. Its like living in the states, just not retarded. And if you do need some retardation the border is usually an hour away.

Incorrect, while in other languages the word has a masculine form and a feminine form, we have two words. One is specific to male and one is specific to female even in English...

fiancé |ˌfēˌänˈsā, fēˈänsā|
noun
a man who is engaged to be married

fiancée |ˌfēˌänˈsā, fēˈänsā|
noun
a woman who is engaged to be married

But many people have reduced the use of such modifiers. So while the dictionary dictates it one way, it does not prevent the opposite from being the norm. An example is the use of apostrophes, it is a formal convention, but very few use it in day-to day English for convenience.

Regardless of American habit, it is still incorrect. It is also a very common thing to correct other people's grammar, the point being that people who type without apostrophes acknowledge that what they are typing is wrong and are just being lazy. Leaving out an apostrophe is different from leaving out an e.

But leaving a letter out of a word is not a new or uncommon thing, in fact the USA is notorious for bastardizing the English language, and many of these bastardizations are widely accepted in that nation.

Let me present my examples:

First is the word axe.
It is of course an English word, but in the Unites States, it is spelled AX. This is an example of how omitting an E is quite acceptable, even when in its original language the E was and still is commonly used. Nations Such as Canada and the UK still spell it as AXE. Of course it was initially spelled AXE when the USA was young, but over the years the E was dropped and this spelling became the norm in the USA.

Another example is the word Colour. As I typed that word into the computer the red line appeared underneath it to show that I was spelling it wrong, however I was taught from a young age that this was the correct spelling, as I was raised in Canada. Now I type Color... no red line. This is because the software I am using was written in the United States, with the local versions being the default. The U was dropped because it was considered an extra letter and inconvenient.

So while the word Fiancé(e) is originally from France. And French uses masculine and feminine modifiers. When this word was imported, both modifiers came with it. Much like how Colour was written as so in the dictionaries brought over to the 12 colonies from England, Fiancé is also written in its original format. But as language evolves the words are altered from their original form to become more convenient.

HERE Is a list of spellings that differ between the United States and Canada. You will notice that the Canadian spelling is almost always longer then the American because the main difference between the two is an omitted letter.

Mota lives in Australia, Much like the USA, or Canada it has its own local dialect. It could well be that in that nation, the commonly accepted spelling is Fiance. I can't confirm it, but it is a possibility. Linguistic deviation is not a new thing, and it is a scary idea for those who absolutely love the English language. With the addition of words such as OMG to the Oxford dictionary, it is something that we must become used to.

Ax is defined as being the same thing as Axe.

Color is defined as being the same thing as Colour.

Fiancé is NOT defined as being the same thing as Fiancée.

Yes, lots of letters were dropped in various words as the American language developed; regardless, Fiancé is defined as something completely different while all those other words were not.
