School Survey (Please read)

Post by Kayar » Sat Nov 29, 2008 12:01 pm

Hello all. For an AP Language project I am researching the effects violent video games have on our youth (or on people in general). It would GREATLY be of MUCH help if you would all complete a survey for me. I need a first-hand source, and right now you're the best I've got. The rough draft of this is due Monday, so I need something solid before then. This should be anonymous, not even your screennames will be released. Perhaps post your answers as a guest with an anonymous name in this topic or one of the others? That's what I suggest. You don't have to, but it should be anonymous. You may number your answers. Please take this survey serioiusly, and maybe I'll give you cookies or something.

1. How many gaming consoles do you own? (If you own a computer and use it for gaming purposes, include it)

2. How many hours would you say per week do you put into playing video games?

3. How many hours do you put into playing violent video games? (some researchers classify violence in video games as an instance in which a character physically hurts or kills another character, whether there is blood or not, while others may classify violence in video games strictly as including killing with blood. Please use your own judgment, but if unsure give an explanation of what kind of violence is in the game)

4. How many T-Rated or higher games do you own which have that rating due to violent content?

5. Do you believe yourself to be a violent person?

6. Do you know someone who has been convicted for an act of violence and who plays or has played violent video games?

7. Would you say that violence in video games today is excessive, perfectly fine, or not enough?

8. Thailand has a top ten list of its most dangerous video games, said to be too violent, and has banned these games from the country. Do you believe such a list is necessary for public safety?

9A. Are you over the age of 21?
9B. If not, would you be surprised to learn that the average gamer is 35 years old and has been playing video games for over 13 years?

10. Have you ever committed violence against another human being or had the intention to?

11. Would you rather play a video game that encourages violence or one that encourages social activity?

Thank you for taking my survey!

11. Would you rather play a video game that encourages violence or one that encourages social activity?

Thank you for taking my survey!
1. Just my mac.

2. Maybe 3 hours per day, 20 hours per week.

3. Right now I mostly play Nexiuz and Halo, and those pretty much consume all of the time I spend gaming.

4. I don't "own" any games really, except for some older games like the Myst series. Most of the games I play I download off the internet. But I'd consider Nexiuz and Halo to have a higher than T-rating, so I'm going to say 2.

5. Not really, no.

6. No.

7. Depends on the game. Games like Halo are fine, they focus more on the shooting than excessive blood and gore. But if I were to get a game like "Death Kill Splatter IV," I might consider it to be a little much.

8. Not really.

9a. Yes, I'm 28 (ya'll better be respectful, young whippersnappers).
9b. Well, I actually am a little surprised at that. I know a few older guys that game, but I thought they were more of a minority.

10. You really have to define violence. As in assault, or murder, or anything like that, no. Definitely not. But if you're talking about beating somebody down in a fight, I don't think anybody here can say that they haven't been in a situation like that.

11. I play what I find fun. I don't really give a shit whether it's violent or not.

1. One, my computer.

2. Ohh, hard to say..42?

3. Most games have blood for the realistic factor. In fact, all of the games I play contain 'blood', but Toribash and DotA are hard to classify. I would say 8, not counting Toribash/Dota. :P

4. I have no idea. Are Halo/CoD2/Counter Strike T-rated?

5. Not at all.

6. Nope.

7. In general, taking in aspect all video games, I'd say the level is manageable.

8. Naaah.

9A. Nope, 14. 15 in 2009.
9B. Is he male? And similar to AI, I thought teenagers were the 'average gamer'.

10. Very very little (intentions). And none at all too serious, meaning to the point of killing intent.

11. It depends on the content, most games that encourage social activity are mild, like Puzzle Shop 2 or Kitchen Master or..yeah. However, gore-filled games do not interest me in the least.

Good luck on this, Kayar :D

Survey size is going to be way too small to be significant. You'd probably be better off with open ended questions asking for stories.
1. How many gaming consoles do you own? (If you own a computer and use it for gaming purposes, include it)

2. How many hours would you say per week do you put into playing video games?

3. How many hours do you put into playing violent video games?

1:
Own: 6
Have access to: 4 (not necessarily ones I own)

2: Indeterminate. Yearly average would run somewhere close to maybe 1.5 hours a week. Long dry spells punctuated by intense activity.

3: Slim to nil. Currently been playing rhythm games and trying out EVE most recently.

4: Every T+ game that I own is rated so because of violence with maybe some other stuff thrown in.

5: No. Does not mean I'm necessarily peaceful despite how I may post.

6: No. Of course correlation does not equal causation.

7: It would seem to make up a large percentage of perceived hard core games but that is a small subset of the gaming population. Too much or too little is simply a matter of taste.

8: No. Censorship is absurd in general and specifically illogical when applied unevenly across different media.

9A: Not quite.
9B: No. Of course this applies to the perceived gamer stereotype discounting the so-called casual gamers and web-based flash gamers.

10: No.

11: One that encourages both.

1. 3-PS1 PS2 and a Mac

2. Hmm... 6 hours?

3. 6 hours a week? I play GTA 3 on PS2. I play Halo Demo for the heck of it.

4. Basically 3/4 of my games are T+. I used to collect the Plastic Combat men games. so... 7?

5. Not really. I'm actually called a hippie.

6. Convicted... Sentenced... but innocent

7. Perfectly Fine- Gaming is simply a way to do things not done in real life.

8. HAHAHAHAHA!!! No, that would simply make people buy more of them.

9A. Nope
9B. Actually, I would not...

10. Hmm... I suppose but it was a burst of anger that last 3 seconds and we both laughed. xD

11. Depends what "Encourages Violence". If it's a game that says "Go kill someone" I'm not gonna play it...

11. Would you rather play a video game that encourages violence or one that encourages social activity?

Thank you for taking my survey!
1) 3.
an Xbox, a Wii and an iMac.
i also used to own a PS2 and i often use a friend's nintendo DS.

2) depends. some days i play like five hours between multiple games, and some other days i don't play anything... >_> i'd say the average is 13.5.

3) again depends by what you consider violent.
but I'd say... 2/3 of games i play is violent.

4) 1/2 of the games i own is rated T or higher. (i think. ¬_¬ PEGI rates with numbers...)

5) Absolutely not. Nervous but not violent.

6) uhm... surely! <.< but i am not sure what you mean as act of violence. >.>

7) i'm not sure. probably it's okay how it is.
i don't mostly care, because if a game is too violent and i don't like it, i just don't buy it. :-\ noone is obligated to buy violent games, no? (probably that has not anything to do with the question.)

8) Not necessary.
then, thailand can do a list of most dangerous video games, but ban them is... stupid. <.<
i mean, warning you that a videogame is violent is legit; but not allowing you to play it is... uhm... how can i say...

...is like saying: "thai restaurants are bad." "i want to eat there anyway, can i?" "no. i've destroyed them all" <_<

9) A: not yet
B: weird. >.> i only encounter children on XBL.

10) meh, depends! surely not physical violence, not at all!
Surely i had intentions! but always depends by A LOT of factors. <.< i would never want to beat up or kill someone unless s/he is REALLY pissing me off; but i would just think of it. i would not do it.

11) i hate both.

Thanks for asking!

PS: wait, i use A LOT of verbal violence! ...i mean, violent speaking... you know... >.> even unnecessarily.
PPS: i love thai restaurants.

hmm... Two or three :3

2. How many hours would you say per week do you put into playing video games?
Depends on which games I feel like playing... Somewhere near 12 when I have lotsa time (and that isn't very often -poutpout-)

3. How many hours do you put into playing violent video games? (some researchers classify violence in video games as an instance in which a character physically hurts or kills another character, whether there is blood or not, while others may classify violence in video games strictly as including killing with blood. Half of that, maybe more ^^

4. How many T-Rated or higher games do you own which have that rating due to violent content?
Only three D:

5. Do you believe yourself to be a violent person?
Only if I'm provoked x3

6. Do you know someone who has been convicted for an act of violence and who plays or has played violent video games?
Yep (but only violent video games) :3

7. Would you say that violence in video games today is excessive, perfectly fine, or not enough?
IT NEEDS MOAR GOAR!!
...not really... it's fine for meh :3

8. Thailand has a top ten list of its most dangerous video games, said to be too violent, and has banned these games from the country. Do you believe such a list is necessary for public safety?
nope XD
If people are influenced by video games, they shouldn't play video games. Banning things like that is just silly.

9A. Are you over the age of 21?
no D:
9B. If not, would you be surprised to learn that the average gamer is 35 years old and has been playing video games for over 13 years?
uhh... a little o.o

10. Have you ever committed violence against another human being or had the intention to?
yes D:

11. Would you rather play a video game that encourages violence or one that encourages social activity?
Neither. I like games with violence, but if violence is encouraged, I'll go somewhere else :3
(games should not encourage less playing of games >>)
(btw, in case the hint is too subtle -

1. How many gaming consoles do you own? (If you own a computer and use it for gaming purposes, include it)
3. (360, Wii, Laptop.)

2. How many hours would you say per week do you put into playing video games?
9-12. It's relaxing, and mentally stimulating.

3. How many hours do you put into playing violent video games? (some researchers classify violence in video games as an instance in which a character physically hurts or kills another character, whether there is blood or not, while others may classify violence in video games strictly as including killing with blood. 8

4. How many T-Rated or higher games do you own which have that rating due to violent content?
5

5. Do you believe yourself to be a violent person?
Nope.

6. Do you know someone who has been convicted for an act of violence and who plays or has played violent video games?
Nope.

7. Would you say that violence in video games today is excessive, perfectly fine, or not enough?
Perfectly fine, but sometimes excessive. For instance, when it goes beyond depicting realism, I think that IS excessive and too far. But realism or below I'm happy with.

8. Thailand has a top ten list of its most dangerous video games, said to be too violent, and has banned these games from the country. Do you believe such a list is necessary for public safety?
No- they should be concentrating on managing society rather than trivial things such as games.

9A. Are you over the age of 21?
No.
9B. If not, would you be surprised to learn that the average gamer is 35 years old and has been playing video games for over 13 years?
Yes, and I find it slightly disturbing and sort of ironic too.

10. Have you ever committed violence against another human being or had the intention to?
Through sports, been in a couple of fights though, in which I have hurt people. Hasn't everyone?

11. Would you rather play a video game that encourages violence or one that encourages social activity?
Neither. I'd rather play a videogame that has an interesting plot, characters, decent graphics and a moral underbelly. One that encourages violence or social activity doesn't interest me specifically.

Glad I could help ;).

Kayar [Crawler] wrote:Hello all.

(If you own a computer and use it for gaming purposes, include it)
2, wii my macbook

2. How many hours would you say per week do you put into playing video games?
alot....lol well it kind of depends. I spend most of the time on my comp modding halo, talking to friends, and browsing internet. Actually playing games, i spend maybe 5 hours.

5

4. How many T-Rated or higher games do you own which have that rating due to violent content?
around 5-10

5. Do you believe yourself to be a violent person?
nooope

6. Do you know someone who has been convicted for an act of violence and who plays or has played violent video games?
nooope

7. Would you say that violence in video games today is excessive, perfectly fine, or not enough?
i think it is kind of excessive, but isn't killing people in video games better than killing people for real?

8. Thailand has a top ten list of its most dangerous video games, said to be too violent, and has banned these games from the country. Do you believe such a list is necessary for public safety?
I agree with fonze in saying that maybe under a certain age. Of course you cant totally stop people from buying violent video games, they will just ask their 25 yr old cousin to buy it for them or something.

9A. Are you over the age of 21?
noope
9B. If not, would you be surprised to learn that the average gamer is 35 years old and has been playing video games for over 13 years?
wow....no lifeeeee (yes im surprised)

10. Have you ever committed violence against another human being or had the intention to?
well. maybe intention because they're either super annoying or being an a hole. like taxi said just thoughts, i obviously wouldn't actually do it. Everyone has thoughts about doing bad things to other people (waitt..or maybe thats just me hehe)

11. Would you rather play a video game that encourages violence or one that encourages social activity?
I think they should make video games for entertainment, not to convey a message.

Thank you for taking my survey!
