What would happen if you removed this entirely?

If you removed it the game would crash... If you changed it to null then the pistol would look like it was shooting but nothing would come out.

To do that, do you just replace that code with F's? Or zeros?

Usually the game has it as the first four bits being 0's and the last four being F's but I don't think it matters.

Float values are basically longs. 4 consecutive bytes in hex.
