RvS Hosting Requirements

Post by Vir2L™ » Thu Apr 20, 2006 10:30 am

Recommended Maximum number of Players by Server Connection Type

Because not all connection types have the same upload bandwidth, the maximum number of players you can host on a server depends on your connection type. Below are the recommended maximum numbers of players for servers based on their connection type.

T1 and More - 16 players without any problems

Cable/ ADSL - Some Cable/ADSL providers purposefully limit upload bandwidth. If your provider does this you can host a maximum of approximately 8 players. Known problems if you host more than 8 players are Lag and Trigger Delay (slight delays when opening doors, manipulating bombs, and the like). If your Cable/ADSL provider does not limit your upload bandwidth you can host games containing more than 8 players.

In order to get optimal server performance on Cable/ADSL servers, be sure to set your connection speed to Cable/ADSL in the Multiplayer screen of the Options menu.

The average upload rate for a T1 server is around 500 bytes/sec per player, and for Cable/ADSL it is around 125 bytes/sec per player. Thus, a T1 server hosting 16 players has to send 16 times 500 bytes to each player, which ends up to a maximum of 128 Kb/sec (500 bytes X 16 players X 16 players) if all players are currently visible to each other.

Here are a few examples of the possible maximum upload rates:

Hosting 16 players
T1/T3 (500 bytes per player) = 128K max upload
Cable (125 bytes per player) = 32K max upload

Hosting 8 players
T1/T3 (500 bytes per player) = 32K max upload
Cable (125 bytes per player) = 8K max upload

Hosting 4 players
T1/T3 (500 bytes per player) = 8K max upload
Cable (125 bytes per player) = 2K max upload

Note: In cooperative mode, terrorists, hostages and A.I. back-ups count as players.

I have Cable with an average 360kbs upload and I can host for 13 (one observer for my laptop). I don't play on the server computer, infact I have all the settings as low as possible with sound off and I shut down a lot of services for maximum processor usage... it even runs via Airport Extreme. I get alot of compliments on how well it runs and my clan doesn't have any real complaints.. which is pretty good since their average ping is from 200-350 (Damn aussies and nz'ers). I think it's a fair advantage for a host to not play on the actual server machine... their is a lot less lag because checking stats and changing kits after death during gameplay makes the server skip a bit. I think to make it better for my clan.. I would have to move west.. and east for the euros..... omg.. damn global clans... boo [a].

Thats good to know.

My ISP says i get 384kbps upload but it's more along the lines of 275kbps, Unfortunatly my ISP caps off my upload so I only get about 35 KB/sec transfer rate on average.
