Torrents are not illegal. It's a lot of the content that's illegal.
If torrents in general were illegal, how could there be so many sites and applications that you can get with the Google search "torrent download"? Would they not be shut down?
  • BitTorrent..........................√
    Azureus.............................√
    Halo Demo game torrent.....√
    Halo full map torrent...........X
    Halo full disk image............X
    TV show torrent..................X
    AMV torrent.......................√
    Free Shareware torrent*.....X
I think you get the idea.

*Applications that you're supposed to pay for but are free via torrent

Torrents are simply a way of downloading data. They are often used to download illegal material, but they are not in themselves illegal.

Once you've downloaded the metadata file (.torrent) open it with a bittorrent client such as transmission. If the tracker is up, then it will connect and start looking for peers. If there are no peers uploading it will be impossible to download the file. If there are though, progress should be visible in the first 30 seconds or so.
