2010 Olympic Games.

Post by Devious » Fri Feb 12, 2010 3:27 pm

Well, I'm lucky enough to live in Vancouver for the international pain-in-the-ass known as the Olympics.

There have bee quite a few changes around here in the past few weeks, most not that great.
first off a crapload of streets have been closed off downtown, i'm just counting my blessings I don't live there. But even here in the GVRD you can see the differences.

Two days ago I got to see the Olympic torch being run past my school, and then later I went to a big "Celebration" at a nearby community center. I found it more like a Nazi propaganda rally then a celebration of Olympic spirit. the main art of the show was Coca-cola and a major bank trying to literally push their products down our throats, and prompting cheers of forced applause. Then there was the Olympic cauldron lighting ceremony, which everyone but me though was a great whoop-de-doo.
Now today is the opening ceremony, when the "Great celebration" will "officially" begin, cause some fat Belgian says so.

Now I don't totally hate the Olympics, cause they brought a few things I rather like.

The first being two weeks off of school (I'm one of the few local ones without it).

The second being I get to see a crapload of military planes and helicopters. I hear a heli every 5 minutes, and every 2 hours or so and Aurora, Hercules, or Globemaster comes by (A few people I know said they saw a CF-18 or two) In addition I've got to see at least 3 different Kingston-Class Coastal patrol ships, and one Halifax class frigate (so far). Aside from the planes and ships, about 5000 soldiers came in ( i saw a few on my bus to school this morning with their green pickups) and even more police.

However I saved the best thing for last,
The third good thing about the Olympics was being able to have this happen in my city:

HE CAME BACK!

Now go and post what you think about all this Olympic junk!
The armaments which thunderstrike the walls
And monarchs tremble in their capitals.
The oak leviathans, whose huge ribs make
Of lord of thee, and arbiter of war;
Alike the Armada's pride, or spoils of Trafalgar.

Don't comment unless you have something real to say.

No Leopards? Lame.

But seriously, yeah, I'd like to go to Vancouver if just for the display of military force. I can imagine there's a shitload of military there if only just for security, and for the lulz Comox must be topped out with CF-18's. I'd also like to see a CC-177 once in my life.

Anyway, try not to get killed with the amount of foreign people there Deev, and tell me if anything american and military related comes in.

You should really take advantage of this opportunity: try to look past the negative stuff and enjoy it. Might be a once in a lifetime thing for you. Do you get to go to any events live? How are the tourists?

Sadly I don't get to attend any events (though my sister does), the tickets are way too expensive. A pair of gold men's hockey tickets went for $30,00, even I wouldn't shell out that much just to watch our boys beat the Russians again.

@Zapconquest, There are plety of cool things happening for free around here for the games, Im not going to sit around and let all the freebies escape without me taking advantage of them. and of course I'll be wathing the games on TV and whatnot.

@ Seafire, there's plenty of military force around, a Huey just flew over my house . The CF-18's are mainly based at YVR for the games,But i heard some American fighters are doing recon in our airspace too. (I've also seen a Merlin heli, and a Cyclone)

Yeah, I read a story in the Edmonton Journal a couple days ago about how a couple Hornets took off from CYVR to intercept what they thought was an unregistered airliner, but it was actually just some radar interference. Potential for an X-Plane movie, no?

LOL, maybe but lets just wait and see if any bigger drama happens.

I know a few days ago at a popular shopping area there was a "bomb" they sent the EOD unit who blew it up. Turns out it was a fishing rod...

Oh, especially at the Olympics. Everyone suddenly gets paranoid about a 9/11 situation on BC place. Good luck getting a 767 down there.

Yeah, some dude died in the Luge tryouts when his sled failed. That's what happens when you go down a hill at 100 kph+ on your back.
