I'm pretty sure that's been confirmed.
It's going to be like terraria. but in 3d.
Except Terraria has no skillpoints and EXP gain either. It's like Minecraft, where your Wooden Pickaxe upgrades to a Stone, then Iron, then hopefully Diamond. Screw Gold, nobody wants that one.
In Terraria it goes from Copper to Silver to Gold (lawl), then the Nightmare Pickaxe, Meteor Pickaxe, and then finally the Molten Pickaxe. But in Terraria it is far more interesting to actually get those pickaxes. In Minecraft its just "dig this far, try to find diamond". Then go find more when it finally starts to wear out. In Terraria you fight giant creatures, destroy orbs that summon meteors, and finally dig your way into the core of the world to do some very dangerous mining, and that is just to craft a bit better tools and armor.
Terraria is Minecraft ten thousand Adventure Updates into the future, in 2D. That said, making pixel art in Terraria is pointless and tedious, and there are no options for contraptions whatsoever, unless you count doors. However, there is a ridiculous amount of crafting options. Terraria is a thousand times more adventure driven then Minecraft, but Minecraft has much more longevity then Terraria because of how things are built and what you can do in the game. For example, I pretty much finished Terraria and I have played 35 hours. I used only knowledge from the game and from a Let's Play that I quickly surpassed. All I can do now is try to find the rarest monsters to obtain their drops, and collect enough supplies to finish my last set of armor and weapons.
